In my Celebrate Recovery step study, we had a section on making amends. I guess this letter is partially an attempt to progress in that task. Sometimes, just like after a breakup, you need closure with the things you were once attached to. A goodbye letter to addiction is like putting an end to your relationship with drugs. You can let go of the past and start thinking about your bright future. You wont believe me but you will hope it is true.

You have been able to share your experiences through writing about your recovery and you have published this experience in a book and through your blog. Your experiences have led you to be able to help others when it comes to battling their own demons of addiction. You can let them know that even though you have not used in nearly 30 years, you relate to the struggles they have gone through. Continue to help as many as you can so that they are able to live a better life as well. You will become a grandfather to an adorable little boy. My advice to you is to be there as much as possible, to be there to love and support him and his mother. As much as you want to be able to spoil the little fella, just remember that the decisions that are to be made about his life are to be made by his parents. Always be there to pass along your wisdom and your experience to help them both through life. The path that you are currently on has certainly taken its twists and turns (don’t worry, this one won’t make you motion sick), but has turned you into the man that you are today.
A Letter to Your Future Self from the Ugly Truth of Your Addiction
If I returned to you, I know I’d be hooked again. But every day I will keep doing what I have to do to keep my obsession at bay — counseling, 12-step meetings, etc — so that I never have to see you again. And so that I can be there to help others who you might victimize. A week later, I found myself fighting with my girlfriend. Without thinking, i went to you. I thought it was just a rebound, that I would see you once and then return to my life. But it never worked out that way with you.
- You are a bright, talented, caring and beautiful woman with so much to give to the world and so much life to live.
- It may seem selfish, but I believe that the center of one’s being can only revolve around oneself.
- This is an unfair burden to place on you, but I’m begging you to make the hard decisions that I can’t make.
- Now my dear Jan – My advice to you is to listen to your doctors and your counselors.
- When we love ourselves, we can better care for and love others.
When things get tough in your recovery process, you can read the letter to remind yourself why you decided to get sober in the first place. This might provide the extra motivation you need to stay on track and avoid a relapse. It’s easy, and confidential – call us to learn about the different teen treatment programs we offer. Here’s what I would tell you instead. When you call your sponsor and say, “I think I might go get fucked up,” instead of doing that I want you to jump straight into service work.
Your Future Self is Smart; It’s Time to Take Her Advice
What anyone else thinks doesn’t matter. So face up to yourself and accept the truth. One of the proudest things that you will be able to say is that you have maintained nearly 30 years of being sober. What I mean is that you have not drunk any alcohol during that time. It is something that is considered being in long-term recovery. I know that you do not understand this at your young age.

Could the Biggest Game Changer in Mental Health Be a Plant?
Her current research focuses on family issues, teen behavioral issues, teen substance abuse, mental health, and relationships. Daily, there are people out there telling you no – bosses, friends, parents, spouses and significant others – and that is just a part of life. Disappointment and hurt are as much a part of living as joy, happiness and love. Hurt is the same for those with addiction as it is for those without. The difference is how we react to and cope with our emotions, whether they are good or bad.
A goodbye letter to alcohol or drugs can also help you in the future. No content or facts on this site are suitable as sole reference in the diagnosis and/or treatment of particular illnesses. I know it’s scary to contemplate living without touching alcohol ever again. It goes against everything we’ve been conditioned to believe – that alcohol is a necessary part of life. You just have to challenge your thinking around that and shift your mindset. Look around … look at Rob Lowe – he lives completely sober and he doesn’t look miserable at all. He’s completely sober and he looks pretty happy sitting there on American Idol. There are many happy sober people out there in the world, so it must be possible to get to that place.
You know you keep waking up at 3am feeling guilty, with a bursting bladder, pounding head and sick guts. You kind of know that already though don’t you? That relationship is going to end. And you don’t want it to and it will feel like someone smashed your heart into a million pieces but you will make it through. And eventually you will be able to see that it was meant to end. And you will never again wish for anything different. I will not remember the traumatic details of my past. And those that were not so traumatic, but hurt nonetheless, I will not remember those either. People don’t see me the way you see me. They call me a junkie, an addict.
I enrolled in a treatment center. The first few days were the worst. Cooped up in my apartment for weeks at a time with only you for company, I began to dawn on me that I was in an unhealthy and abusive relationship with you. You wouldn’t let me see anyone else. I would try sometimes to go out and have fun with my real friends. After only an hour or two, I would feel you calling me, tugging at me, telling me I had to go home and be with you or I would suffer consequences. After a while, you started to tell me that I didn’t need anyone else.
Healing from addiction and entering a life of recovery becomes more than just abstinence from substances. Our holistic perspective on treatment will be based on your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs to help achieve a balanced life and lasting recovery. I spent years trying to leave you, but I never succeeded for more than a few days or weeks at a time. In fact, I was in debt because of you. When I first met you, I wasn’t sure how I felt. I liked the way you made me feel but I didn’t like how I was around you. I acted differently around my friends, I ditched school to be with you, I even spent my hard-earned money on you. If you are struggling to articulate your feelings about the emotional roller coaster that is early recovery, a letter may be able to help. We hear so many politicians and advocacy groups calling for more and more action on gun control.
Never underestimate the difference you can make in the lives… When it comes to staying sober, why go it alone? At Design for Recovery, happiness is synonymous with sobriety! There will be pain as you will lose your youngest daughter to the tragedy of suicide. You will feel as you are to blame and there will be times that you feel that others are blaming you as well. As painful as all of this is, you can and will get through it. I know that this will be the strangest letter that you will ever read in your life. The reason that I say this is that I am the future version of you. I felt compelled to write this to you as a guide that will help you throughout your lifetime.
As a result, I know I have to leave you. I have tried to leave you in the past; however, every time I try to leave you behind, you simply come back stronger than ever before. I realized that the only way I could be able to leave addiction letter to self you would be if I hit rock bottom first. The only thing is that I didn’t know exactly what rock bottom meant. How much more do I have to lose before I’m willing to leave you for good? Will it be a trip to the hospital?
I have ignored your feelings for far too long. You have offered your help and I keep turning it down. I keep lying to myself and you by telling myself that I am not ready and that I can’t do this. In order to enter a living recovery, we will encourage you to look at building a foundation from which to live that brings contentment, peace, compassion and wisdom. We offer couples and family therapy, Sober House and your therapist will be managing that part of your treatment. We hope to learn as much about you as possible in order to provide a holistic approach to healing in your life. When our clients are honest and open, we can better assist them in exploring the underlying issues related to their substance abuse. Many times, throughout our lives we become absolutely certain about our perceptions.
Is addiction a mental health issue?
These changes affect a person's behaviour, leading to a loss of control over their use of substances or behaviours. Although addiction is not technically considered a mental illness, it is a medical disorder that often co-occurs with mental illnesses.
